Job Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer’s role is to plan, design, implement, and manage the organization’s storage, enterprise backup systems and physical, and virtual infrastructure according to best practices, company policy, and regulatory requirements. The SSE is responsible for adhering to project timelines while maintaining the highest level of accuracy, reliability, and infrastructure availability.

The Senior System Engineer will develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to ensure consistent and repeatable practices for the provisioning of storage and enterprise backups, as well as physical and virtual machines running on UNIX based platforms. The SSE will be responsible for the management of corporate and production systems, and will assist in the day to day operational support. Additionally the Senior Storage Systems Engineer will function as a senior technical lead resource, reporting to the Manager, Systems Engineering (UNIX/Storage).

Core Job duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads in the areas of UNIX systems and products providing subject matter expertise

  • Participates in the translation of architecture documents into design and configuration specifications

  • Leads in the areas of UNIX technologies and products, providing subject matter expertise (Solaris, AIX & Linux)

  • Install and configure technology components as per the design or vendor specifications

  • Strong in UNIX related virtualization technologies.

  • Participates in the development of test plans and test cases, and conducts system testing of technology components

  • Participates in project scheduling and planning activities

  • Interacts with project teams in the implementation and configuration of technology solutions

  • Assess impact of scope changes

  • Installation and configuration of UNIX/Linux hardware and software

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, administer and systems tuning ( operating systems & hardware

  • Perform upgrades and testing for systems hardware, software and third party tools

  • Perform system management activities including backup management, storage management and system sizing and patch management.

  • Documents build and run books for Steady State Operations

  • Develop and document the configuration and operations of UNIX/Linux systems

  • Plan, design and implement messaging security products and related mechanisms

  • Experience in scripting and automation tools.

  • Function as part of an On-Call rotation to provide 24x7 support

Additional Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installation and configuration of enterprise storage systems (Hitachi, EMC & NetApp)

  • Installation and configuration of SAN switches (Brocade & Cisco)

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, administer and tune storage systems

  • Providing subject matter expertise for Storage systems and SAN switches.

  • Research and recommend the purchase of storage, backup, and system software and hardware products

  • Perform capacity planning analysis and other needs assessments for Storage systems

  • Design redundant systems and policies for disaster recovery and archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of storage appliances and stored data assets

  • Develop strategies and policies to ensure best-practice based regulatory compliance and reduce legal exposure

  • Installation and configuration of enterprise storage systems and backup systems along with UNIX hardware and software

Education, Experience and Competencies:

  • Degree or Diploma in Computer Science or equivalent experience

  • One or more certifications in the corresponding: UNIX, Solaris, AIX, Linux, SAN Storage technologies

  • Minimum 6-8 years’ experience deploying, managing, and administering UNIX & Linux based operating systems

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing enterprise storage solutions

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with Solaris & AIX

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a backup administrator (NetBackup, CommVault, and EMC Data Domain products preferred)

  • Familiarity with Ansible and automation technologies

  • Strong UNIX shell scripting/automation experience (Ansible, Perl, sed/awk etc.)

  • Strong UNIX system/network performance troubleshooting skills

  • Experience with Red Hat satellite server

  • Knowledge and experience with Red Hat virtualization

  • In depth knowledge of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, ARP, HTTP, HTTP/S, FTP, NTP) is required

  • Excellent knowledge of storage area networks including: Fiber Channel, iSCSI, SAN based replication, RAID etc.

  • In depth experience with an array of clustering technologies, encryption, virtualization and messaging technologies

  • Knowledge of applicable data retention practices and laws

  • Knowledge of monitoring technologies and best practices

  • Strong understanding of ITIL and change management policies and procedures

  • Previous experience as a member of a technical support team in a 24x7 operating environment

  • Ability to express oneself clearly and logically, both written and verbally

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a high level of focus on customer service

  • Experience with SQL and Oracle databases is an asset

  • Experience with VMware vSphere, ESX and vCenter products an asset

  • Experience with Azure cloud technologies and IAC is an asset

  • Experience with configuration management tools

  • After hours on-call support (as required)
